Jeremiah 33:14-16

First Sunday of Advent

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

  1. Israel had a longing for a restored dynasty of kings connected to old King David. He was the most successful of their kings and wanting those days back - just insert your favorite president whose administration you miss and you'll get the idea. Israel desperately wanted to see justice and righteousness in a time when they'd gotten used to living without either.

What have learned learned not to expect? Trustworthy friends or bosses? Have you come to just accept poverty? Terrorism? Corrupt politicians? What heartbreaking realities get nothing but a shrug from you?

No! Shake off those chains imprisoning you in a sense of helplessness, and start to embrace hopefulness instead. We are called to a kind of holy restlessness that does not confuse persistence with permanence. God has a promise of a future with a hope for the end of heartbreak. Choose to look for possibilities where you'd normally see pointlessness. After all, we believe in God.

Tonight, name before God the things you have come to accept that should bother you. And pray for the gift of restlessness.
